Wee little bird

I want to tell you about my friend Christy.

Christy is a girl who attended the same high school as I for a couple of years and while we were in the same grade I didn't really know her. And then she did something really cool and went to school on a sailboat for our final year while I stayed behind and her jr. high boyfriend became my high school boyfriend. Which was really the only thing I actually knew about her.

And then after high school while that boy was my boyfriend off and on, he used to talk about her off and on and I could tell that there was a little note of longing in his voice that was definitely not there when he talked about me. This made me feel like I probably did not like Christy very much because I was pretty nuts about that boy and wanted him to be nuts about me. And perhaps more than dislike, I was actually a little intimidated and frightened of her apparent magical hold over my true love.

Well one day I went to a backyard gathering with the boyfriend to a house where Christy lived with a whole bunch of other roommates. And there amongst the large trees and campfire and candlelight I made a surprising discovery.... that Christy was in fact way cooler than the boy and much more worthy of my time and attention.

After a solid night of girl bonding, (which mostly involved boy-bashing), we became bonafide friends and our friendship continued over the years. I discovered that Christy was funny and warm and smart and interesting and nothing to be afraid of. She was also completely uninterested in my boyfriend which really endeared her to me. And when I said goodbye to the boyfriend for good, Christy was there cheering me on, firmly in my corner, a wonderful friend to commiserate with.

Over the years, Christy and I have not seen each other a whole lot. She has been busy with her work and new family as have I, but we still try to keep in touch every few months by phone or email, and get together with our kiddies when we can.

A few weeks ago, I ran into Christy and her family at Ikea and found out they were expecting their third baby sometime at the end of October. With many promises of getting together soon, I couldn't believe it when not very long after I discovered via Facebook (of course), that Christy was in the hospital trying to keep her baby from making an unfashionable early entrance.

I got up to the hospital to see her only once before getting completely sideswiped with a wedding, a funeral and general back to school craziness and then last week I discovered something else.

Christy did indeed have her baby, a 2nd daughter and sister to little Sophie and Ollie, early as feared. Wee little Sadie was born at 29 weeks. She is so tiny her weight is still relayed in grams. Christy and her husband Greg have started a blog to document Sadie's progress as she bulks up at the Foothills NICU, and I wanted to share it all with you.

It is a wonderful reminder for me of the miracle of life and of how often I take for granted the whole process of pregnancy and childbirth.

Congratulations to Greg, Christy, Sophie and Ollie on your precious new family member. Lots of love and prayers from all of us to you as you care for your sweet Sadie and many wishes for health and happiness to her and each of you.

Me thinks me feels a pang

Firstly I am overdue on some congratulations.

There has been a veritable baby boom these last few months, and I have been neglectful in keeping up, in terms of blog posts, with all the precious additions that have come along of late.

Waaay back in January:
Reid and Kellie, having matched us with Noah for Malachi in 2007, produced their counterpart to Kashton with the birth of another little boy, Kobe.

In February:
Zarah Bailey arrived to proud parents, Ryan and Coreen.

In March:
My cousin Alex and his lovely Indian bride Cherry had their third child, and second daughter, Miss Hayley Ann Halsey.

In April:
Baby Kipp made sweet Cora Puffalt, daughter of Corey and Patty-Jo, a big sister.
Allison and Jayden Massey welcomed their first, baby Cayla.
Marcy and Ryan Moe had their third baby, a sweet little boy named Gage

In May:
Gavan's boss Ron and his wife celebrated the arrival of their fourth child, Maria.
Julie and Rod Blonke made their duo a trio with the birth of another little girl, Georgia.
Calvin and Gelila Mast became a family of four with the birth of Mikai.
Keirah was born to Jeremiah and Becca Arkell, a friend of mine from the bank.
The Johnson family celebrated yet another grandson with Jax becoming the fourth child to Katrina and Kent Affleck.
And Xavier Tannikal Seeber was joyfully welcomed into the anxious arms of parents Carson, Larissa and big sister, Azriah.

In June:
Gri, Jeff and Delano Macdonald proudly announced the birth of baby Anecia.
And added to the ranks of first-timers are Amanda and Glenn Pipke with the arrival of Lucy.

And there are more to come in the weeks and months that follow.

All this leads me to a couple of questions. As in, who's next, and why won't it be me? Yes that's correct, I must admit my ovaries are twitching a tiny bit with the birth of all these amazing little people. My own babies are growing up too fast, and I'm feeling a little forlorn that the thrill new life that all of these families are experiencing will never be mine to experience again in the same way.

On the other hand, I see the laundry piled up, our pushed-to-the-max square footage, the ever-growing grocery bill and think.... "yep, three is enough".

I guess, like most things, time will tell.

before I forget

I made the baby laugh last week. His first little giggles are so sweet! It's fun finding out who this new little person is. So far, I like him!

Malachi has his first two molars, and likes to use them. Ouch.

In baby news:

Little India Adrienne Hughes was born on Nov. 20th. Yay for a girl! A sister for Shiloh and another little doll to dress up and coo over. The boys are less impressed, but they're slowly coming around. We like to tease her parents that at 8lbs 11oz, India is the runt of the family! Congratulations Hughes family!

My good friend Amanda is going to be a mommy!!! This news is thrilling for so many reasons, not least of all that she has had to endure countless coffees and get-togethers with those of us already in the "mom" club and suffered through endless discussions around parenting in general over the last few years. Baby Pipke is due June 12th, and we will be eagerly awaiting his/her arrival. (I almost just wrote "her". Hmmm... a girl perhaps?)
Congratulations Glenn and Amanda!

My friend Sue gave birth to her little girl, Hayley a couple weeks ago, and they are coming over today. Can't wait to meet her!

India and Hayley are only weeks younger than Kashton, but it makes such a HUGE difference at this age. By this time next year, you'll hardly know the difference.

Aside from that, I think everyone I know is pregnant or has just had a baby. There honestly has to be something in the water. The stork is going to be busy in the next few months, with deliveries expected at the following households:

Kellie and Reid Anderson - January 16th
Coreen and Ryan Bailey - February
Patty-jo and Corey Puffalt - April 18th
Katrina and Kent Affleck -
Marci and Ryan Moe -
Larissa and Carson Seeber - May 28th
Gelila and Calvin Mast - May 22nd
Amanda and Kipp Sakundiak
Griselda and Jeff Macdonald
Allison and Jayden Massey - April 18th
Amanda and Glenn Pipke - June 12th
Julie and Rod Blonke - June
